One thing to bear in mind is, a new set of florescent light doe not cost much, so before wasting a few hours to fault finding what is wrong with the florescent light, ask yourself if it is worth it.
There are 3 main components that makes a florescent light work. The tube, the starter and the ballast or choke. These are the 3 components that works itself to death in all florescent lights. So the first things to check are these three.
In all fault finding scenarios, do not think in too complex terms. A florescent light that has been working all the while will not be too big of a problem. Most probably it is just a minor problem. Start from the source. Look for these symptoms.
The Florescent Tube has both ends that has blackened and both ends glows when switched on. The tube needs replacing.
The Florescent Tube keeps flickering and will not light up – The starter needs replacing
The Florescent Light is dead as a doornail.
These symptom is the most difficult to determine. When nothing happens, we don’t know the actual reason. So first check the switch. If you are up to it, you can open up the switch and check if current is passing through the 2 terminals when switched on. Else, I would advise you call in the electrician. YOU MIGHT GET ELECTROCUTED!
You can take a safer step and bet with your chances. Replace the ballast. If it still doesn’t give any sign of lighting up, not even flickering or glowing after replacing the ballast, don’t waste your time anymore. Replace the whole set. Or get your favorite electrician if you have sentimental feelings for that light.
