The most common type is the single pole switch which we see in our homes. Single pole switches can be bundled to together into 2, 3 or 4 switches within one enclosure. Those with 2 switches bundled together are called 2 gang switch. Those with 3 lined together is called a 3 gang switch.

Other than multiple gang switches, switches are also designed to suit different uses. For example, many corridors of hotels uses the 2 way switch or the 3 way switch. These switches are designed in such a way that lights can be switched on at one end, and the can be switched off at the other even though using 2 different switches located at different places but controlling the same light.

The most convenient and widely used switches are the 2 way switch and the 3 way switch. A 3 way switch also works similarly except you can have another switch in the center location of the corridor so you have 3 switches controlling the same light and all 3 switches works independently though the wiring are interconnected in such a way that all three switches depends on each other in order to word and function properly.
